The briefing of the “Introducing” design competition launched by US-American headwear label New Era was to transform a blank 59FIFTY cap into a creative object. The result is a plethora of impressive and often surprising interpretations of the New Era classic.
The winning model, a cap covered in red velvet with an elaborately laser cut outer structure made from wood, looks like it has jumped straight from the pages of “One Thousand and One Nights”. Winner Lina Al-Amoudi from the United Arab Emirates can look forward to receiving a bursary of £10,000. We also like the typewriter cap and the bear’s head design made from matchsticks.
The 80 best submissions are now on a travelling exhibition tour. After London, Berlin and Milan they will be on show in Barcelona (Marqués de Barberá no. 8; 08001 Barcelona). Further stopovers include: Paris, Stockholm, Cape Town and Dubai.
Pictures of the exhibits and information about the artists who created them have been published in a limited edition collector’s book.
