When a new creative project is launched in Germany, there's usually just the one location: Soho House in Berlin – which is fine by me, being only two minutes away from my office. But instead, yesterday evening, for the German launch of the worldwide avant-garde art action Beck’s Green Box Project around 250 guests were invited to the RAW. A spectacular Augmented Reality work of art was presented by the artists' collective from Miami, FriendsWithYou, which is available to watch as of now on iPhone, iPad, Android and on the Beck’s Key App at the Brandenburg Gate.
The installation is on from 7. December until 2. January 2012 – which is great as it gives the hundreds of thousands of tourists expected at the Brandenburg Gate for New Years' an alternative motif for their photograph album to "Mum in front of the Adlon Hotel".
The Beck’s Green Box Project was kicked off by a 61-metre-high digital sculpture by the internationally renowned sculptor Arne Quinze, which was unveiled on Independence Day on 4. July 2011 via Augmented Reality over the Statue of Liberty's torch. Now it's Germany's turn: Beck's is hosting a home game and coming to Germany with the Green Box Project in order to support creative newcomers here.
As well as that, a Green Box will be places in the Appel Design Gallery in Torstraße 114 in Berlin in order to explain how to use Augmented Reality. For three weeks interested passers-by can discover the contents of the box with the help of the iPads installed there and so, in addition to the highlight at Brandenburg Gate, have another location where they can become acquainted with the project.
The only thing left to say is: Yes, AR also works in the rain. Experiment due to unavoidable inclement weather.
