On August 3rd, danish designer Gaia showed her collection for spring/summer 2012 during Copenhagen Fashion Week. It’s about time we present to you the young talent.
The name Gaia comes from Greek mythology. It is a divine name – signifying Mother Earth, who, according to Hesiod, emerged from the chaos to give birth to the mountains and earth. In keeping with the whole ‘nomes est omen’ principle, the relationship between illusion and reality also inspires and interests Gaia Brandt Rasmussen. The graduate from Central Saint Martins College in London founded her label in Copenhagen in 2009 and has been presenting her work at Copenhagen Fashion Week since last season. This is a pretty logical step, as collections like Gaia’s simply require a fitting platform. Each collection is based on a visual art experience. Despite this, for the trained tailor, fashion is primarily a craftsmanship. In preparation for the spring/summer 2012 collection Gaia is taking isead from Dadaist collages: from the letters she creates a piece of visual poetry, the tenor of which she then allows to guide her designs. As well as collages by the artist Kurt Schwitters and paintings by Vilhelm Hammershoi she also studied the history of denim for this season continuously bringing her signature style to perfection: graphic color combinations and trompe l’oeuil effects provide a cartoonesqueexpression. The silhouettes, however, are continuing to get wider.
