With the collections for spring/summer 2012 Paris Fashion Week drew to a close yesterday. And the designers once again came up with all sorts of fanciful ideas for their shows.
Marc Jacobs gave the Louis Vuitton show a fairytale-like feeling with a giant carousel and Karl Lagerfeld created an underwater theme for Chanel with oversized shells.
Slightly more understated, but no less spectacular, was the show by Belgian fashion label Maison Martin Margiela. Typically for Margiela the faces of the models were barely recognisable. Despite their hair obstructing their view they managed to sashay perfectly down the catwalk that was covered in mismatching Persian rugs.
The design team seems to have liked the paisley pattern, plus fringing, so much that that it appeared on shoes, capes and dresses. Particularly elegant were the floor-sweeping, loosely draped silk dresses in shimmering night blue and greige. And as a contrast, the collection also featured sturdy leather waistcoats and jackets, which seemed as if they were only provisionally finished due to their unstitched hems. But that’s what Margiela is all about: moving away from the norm, trying out something new and being provocative. Wonderfully avant-garde!
