As we all know, photographs can be so much more than simply images. Pictures have an innate power, influencing public discourse and challenging you to reflect and react. The international forum for photography C/O Berlin is presenting the exhibition 'unheimlich vertraut - Bilder vom Terror' ('Incredibly familiar' images of terror) from 10. September to 4. December. The exhibition is taking place on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of 9/11, exploring the meaning of photography for our everyday visual culture through visual processing of various images of terror from the past decades.

Munich 1972 and New York 2001 serve as historic markers for the exhibition. Only by confronting the images of terror are structures exposed which show the methodology behind the use and dissemination of images in the modern media world. Through artistic analysis, political images are questioned and historical image sources expose the construction and illusion of photography. The exhibition, curated for C/O Berlin by Felix Hoffmann, shows around 200 images from the Spiegel archive, and the work of 30 artists, amongst them Thomas Ruff, Simon Menner, Peter Piller, Christoph Draeger,Thomas Hirschhorn, G.R.A.M., Helmut Newton, Walid Raad, Gael Peltier, Michael Schirner, Robert Boyd, Pascale Couvert, Natalie Czech, Reymond Deparden, Michael Schäfer, Marc Volk and Malte Wandel .

The opening is on Friday, 9. September 2011 at 7pm in the Postfuhramt in Oranienburger Straße 35/36, Berlin-Mitte.
