From today the artist Carlos Rolon aka Dzine from Chicago is presenting his first solo exhibition in the Gestalten Space at Sophienstraße 21 in Berlin. This time his sculptures, pictures and installations are inspired by the Latin American customising scene for cars and motorcycles.
He was particularly fascinated by the youngsters on the Caribbean island of Curacao who don’t have any money for motorbikes or cars. This is why they pimp up their bicycles to become their most important style and status symbols.
Dzine is now taking this trend to the extreme. The centrepiece of his exhibition is an installation entitled “Voodoo”. It shows a completely gold-plated bicycle adorned with religious ornaments and enthroned on an altar decorated in flowers. This is his way of questioning our own system of values in an ironic, tongue-in-cheek way.
His detailed works can be admired until 16 October.
And if you can’t get enough of Dzine, check out the book about the artist published by the renowned Gestalten Verlag.
